The Butterfly Project, a project of hope!

The Butterfly Project, a project of hope!

The last years between 10 and 15% of teens in USA are committing acts of self-injury also called cutting. When teens feel sad, distressed, anxious, or confused they cut themselves on the arms, stomach, or thighs with a sharp object, trying to find relief of stress, anxiety and school and/or family problems. Besides the support from parents, counselors and therapists, there is a great project that is helping and supporting a lot of kids and teens. This week I would like to share with you “The Butterfly Project”… This is an amazing idea created by an anonymous teenager girl who decided to create a tumblr blog for hope to help suicidal teens that cut. In 2011 she started with “The Butterfly Project”, which is dedicated to teenagers who cut themselves.
Here are the rules for “The Butterfly Project”:

1. when you feel like you want to cut, take a marker or pen and draw a butterfly wherever the self-harm occurs.
2. name the butterfly after a loved one, or someone that really wants you to get better.
3. NO scrubbing the butterfly off.
4. if you cut before the butterfly is gone, it dies. if you don't cut, it lives.
5. if you have more than one, cutting kills them all.
6. another person may draw them on you. these butterflies are extra special. take good care of them.
7. even if you don’t cut, feel free to draw a butterfly anyways, to show your support.

For teenagers that are looking for hope or someone to talk to, please go to her Tumblr Blog:
