• Get to know your roommates. It is important that you take time to know where your roommate comes from and what his or her story is. Having a good living situation will allow you to better focus on your studies and it will contribute to your overall happiness during the school year.
• Familiarize yourself with your professors’ office hours, meaning what time they are available after classes for you to receive help. Even if you are doing well in class and have no need to go to your professors’ office hour it is a good idea to just stop by sometimes and begin to build a good relationship with them. Having a good relationships with your professors will bring you great benefits in the future such as recommendation letters for scholarships or future job opportunities.
• Get involved. There are many ways to get involved on campus through sports, student government, and clubs. Freshman year is a great time to get involved with anything that peaks your interest and it a great way to meet new friends.
• Make sure you find a good balance between going home and staying on campus during the weekends. It most likely that at some point during your freshman year you will feel a little bit of homesickness. This is completely normal; however, remember that if you go home every weekend you will miss out on a great campus events and building new friendships.
• Get organized. One of the first things you should get yourself is a planner. Write down every important deadline including exams dates. This will help you balance your extra-curricular activities and homework. Remember that for every hour you are in class you are expected to study for two hours. It is important to include this in your planner as well.
