The Review of Success: "Julio’s Day"

The Review of Success
By: Elizabeth Lopez

This week’s review goes out to all comic book lovers out there! Gilbert Hernandez, best known for the “Love & Rockets” comic book series he co-wrote with his brother Jaime Hernandez, is back with a new graphic novel entitled “Julio’s Day.” The story centers around the life of Julio, a 100 year-old Mexican-American man. The 100 pages in the story are representative of his age and life cycle, but also reveal key moments in Julio’s life from birth to death. The story is an emotionally-packed portrayal of Hispanic life in the southwest and we get a great sense for how important historical periods in U.S. history shaped Julio’s family in funny, harsh, tragic, and liberating ways. This is a great introduction to the comics of the Hernandez brothers and will be much enjoyed by long-time fans.
